Palavers

Too many blogs, too little time to think and even less time to write. This is really a conundrum of sorts. We enjoy the feedback, the compliments, and the encouragement of sweet, supportive people. But what are we doing?

When I was young, girls knew that boys worked really hard at seduction. And we consciously ignored them at first, or as long as we could. Eventually, as words and deeds kept on coming, they produced the desired results. Those of us who had brothers, and saw how crass and rowdy they were, should have been better prepared for the machinations.

Through pictures, stories, games, awards, ( now, hang on. I do appreciate all of these things.) we are snared into the circle of blogger tribal behavior, read, respond, write, read, respond. Repeat.

For a year, I wrote quietly, in isolation. In January, just before my birthday, I hungered for companionship. I began to look at "Blogs of Note". And that's how it started. Have I changed my modus operandi? Yes. I made some gains, and I have some losses. I believe what is happening to me is a seduction of sort. I love following a dozen blogs regularly, breaking up my day of leisure with more leisure.

Is all this distracting? Is this just a fad? Like the yogurt bars of the early nineties?

Distracting? Yes. A fad? Probably yes. My husband compulsively reads news online. Different than a newspaper but still worthy. We learn from each other and share our lives with our blogs and that is the important thing.

I'm not sure I agree with this being a fad... it could be, but I'm just not sure. I drove into Austin today with my husband and on the way talked about the people with whom I blog. I really was thinking that what people say brings other things to mind. It makes us think more. As I drove along I was thinking (and discussing with Gerald) what my next few blogs would be. And about adding a postscript to one I've already done. I think this blogging makes us more creative. We are involved, using our minds, stretching ourselves.

Why oh why do you always have to be so interesting?

We need to reach out and when like finds like it is a good thing.

Hi, R., I had this same thought yesterday.

If it is indeed a fad, then why not treat it like a delicious treat, to be savoured in the moment?
Enjoy every minute,it is something to stretch us and make our creativity flow as the others have said.

There are always positives and negatives to every situation.
Personally, I am loving it! xx

M, I agree, we learn from each other.

Cheryl, others do help us think in different ways. They also give us a kick in the behind.

Renee, when likes finds like it's a good thing indeed.
And thank you for the 'interesting' comment. That's appreciated.

Natalie, enjoy the treat, you say. like an indulgence that we have earned already. Yes.

All right, ladies, you have provided me with enough arguments to ponder over. Thanks.

And ladies, another thought: bloggers are exposing all kinds of misdemeanors in real life.

What's this all about? Is the cat out of the bag?

You do pose the most interesting questions! I'm interested in your volunteer work at the school - and the letters students are writing to President Obama. Will you ask them if you can share a few anonymously on the blog?

i get so much out of blogging, and interaction with the great people out there... and just like Lizzy, i'm always telling my husband about my new blog friends! it's great, and i find it much more rewarding than something like Facebook, which used to be my addiction prior to blogging! :-)

Ladies,
I have retracted my words about blogging being just a palaver; it is a news medium as well as a mode of self expression, solidarity for causes, a medium for sharing concerns, a mode to rally the troupes.

Let's!

I too was unread for a good three years and I enjoyed just keeping a diary with spellcheck and some pictures. Now that I have followers and leave comments, I know that I am writing to be read. I enjoy this more, but miss my old style of writing only for myself.

What is a fad? For me I can say I am learning new words and ideas and meeting new friends all the time and enjoy it so much! And look, you have followed my advice and now know about Angela in Cape Town! Doesn`t this really enrich our lives? I am also, like Cheryl, telling my husband about my blog friends, and that`s fun to both of us. Did I say we have a house to rent out? (attached to ours!)I wonder who will be the first one of you we will meet?!

I think the thing about blogging is to write with yourself in mind - I began, believing my writing would be like me shouting, echoing into a cave...

Then, we find friends we can laugh with and occasionally console, we can talk about as if they were friends, as others have said here - Many bloggers will continue to come and some will fall by the wayside, satiated...

I think of it more as a hobby, than a fad. It is fulfilling a need for many - published, unpublished and wonderfully amateur writers, and you are very welcome among friends, lakeviewer!

Dear Lakeviewer, i love that you brought this up, and I think just the same thoughts sometimes. BUT... then, I know that this blogging has only brought positive to my life so I guess for me, thats the bottom line. That and the fact that if I ever decide that I am done with this type of journaling, I can always have my blog all bound up in a book to put away with the rest of my journals/diarys. It is still a record of our lives. And that is a good thing for our future generations!
