TRick-o-treat for Unicef

You know how it is: you don't want your own children to eat all that candy they pick up on Halloween. So, why hand   out candy at all?
Do something good for children of the world.

Support Unicef campaign to purchase clean water!
.
Have your children collect coins for Unicef.
Go to any Toys-R-Us store, or search Unicef on line for stores where collection boxes are distributed, and arm your children with a good cause.

When they get back home, offer them fruit and fresh veggies to celebrate their success!

Happy Halloween!

Phinnaeus and Marigold always carry their little Unicef boxes with them and collect for Unicef, but I think it's nice to keep the fun in Halloween and let them collect treats too. Halloween is one of the fun celebrations for children.

Unicef in Canada cut out this program. They said dealing with all the nickels and dimes and pennies was just too labor intensive. Too bad they didn't ask each participant to deal with the coins instead. Would have been a great learning opportunity for the kids.....

My kids are past the trick or treat stage, but that's a great idea!

That's a great alternative. But I know me, I'd have candy ready at home for all their efforts. :P

Great Idea! I think we have a Toys R Us about 3 miles from here :-)

Neat! I am in the middle of candy and tom-foolery tonight and you bring us all right back to earth. Good idea...use the holidays for good and to help others! Great post!

Good advice. But we have so many kids in this neighborhood that every year we hand out something - usually sugar free gum or something similar.

I think that's a great idea for kiddos who feel too old to trick or treat but still want to enjoy the night! I think we never can give kids too many opportunities to serve others.

I certainly support this project; it gives kids a chance to think beyond themselves — always a good experience.

Brilliant idea sixtyfive~ this brings a funny story to mind.

Last year we had all but three children come to our door, which was a surprise because we live out in the country and never had anyone before, anyways, we were not prepared so we gave them granola bars and you should have seen their faces. a little disappointed they were. that was a much healthier snack than the usually candy, but I believe that if we persist with good intentions eventually we will make a change.

yes...support unicef!

That's a great idea - but how do the kids take the news?!

Great idea and Unicef has been around for decades. I did it 60 years ago. It makes the little ones feel good, I know it did me.

If only there were a way to turn around the expectations. Good alternatives, Rosaria!

Thank you for such a nice comment. I do enjoy writing, lol. It is like a lot of my "doings", I have to use my own way. I know none of the "required" rules,,well maybe some, but I like to write as in the manner that i think. May I visit you site again?

That's an awewome idea.

Very few celebrate Halloween here in Australia... not surprising I guess as it is an American celebration.
It does sound like a lot of fun.

Happy Halloween to you and your family x :)

I know that Halloween did not exist when I lived in France as a kid, so I could never get into the celebration in the US, as much as other families. I agree, it's nice to teach our kids to help others, but I keep coming back to when my family lived for a year in Belize, and they mentored a small Belizean boy, and taught him how to read and write basic letters in English. This truly transformed them, in a way that is difficult to do when it's an organization, with donations, where they do not "see" the results directly. I wish all comfortable, suburban families could get a chance to experience life in a place where everyone has less. They might change their outlook, especially teenagers.

Thanks for reminding me of UNICEF. I had forgotten about it. Nice post.

Unicef, of course, is such a worth cause. We really don't get children in our neighborhood. I always buy candy - which I end up eating - as we may have, at the most, five kids stop by.

Fabulous idea. Of course, I am giving it out, not taking it in!

This is a most perfect alternative--for any holiday. Help those who need help. Teach children to give and then they'll be more appreciative with what they get (hopefully).

I love your new picture! I just created a new blog, but had to delete my old one. Some really crazy (is it the Halloween blogger spook) thing happened to it. Every time I tried to follow someone else blog, a man's picture (a man I had been helping set up his blog) kept popping up. So I deleted the blog, but not until I exported it. Everything is now imported into the new one that has only a slightly different title: A Long Journey Home instead of Long Journey Home. But now I've got to get my followers back. But I can go through the list and pick the ones who REALLY follow me and the ones I want to keep following. Some people come in to our blogs only once!

Hope you've had a wonderful weekend!
