In the mood...

(photo: Atelier de Campagne)

Another 'dream' picture, this one for a sun room/garden room. When I lived in Southern California, sunshine pouring in from everywhere, I knew nothing of long grey days, wet and windy days that would keep us indoors for hours.  Now, I need to pretend that the sun will come out soon, and green things can grow anywhere.

Hence, a sun room necessity for the Northwest. Ours is full of outdoor furniture and odds and ends we move around and can't bear  to throw away.  My project this winter is to clear out and keep just the things that put me in a good mood:

This is what I want:

1. Benches and tables.
2. Pots and vases.
3. Snips of Provence in bistro chairs and distressed wood.
4. Plants: cuttings, seeds, starters, full grown olive and fig trees.
5. Watering cans.
6. Dry bouquets of herbs, roses, lavender, assorted flowers.
7. Naked branches and dried grasses for assembling and displaying with some seasonal flair.
8. Easels and paint and paintbrushes for when the mood strikes me.
9. Catalogues and pictures to inspire the gardener, the painter, the naturalist.
10. And last, but not least, a cozy place to nap on, with the sun on my face.

I LOVE this picture and the idea you have! When I was with a friend in England they had a tiny house and a sun room. The sun room was amazing in their gray climate.

Sounds wonderful. When it is completed are you looking for visitor?!!!

From dark, grey northern England I so would love the room you are planning. Many of my friends here have such a room, a "conservatory" -- makes all the difference to ones sense of well-being when the nights are long -- and also when the summers are wet and murky! Somehow all seems right in the world when you can close your eyes and feel the sun on your face ...

I love your idea, Rosaria! It will be such a boost for the spirit with the promise of sun!

... with a place for kitty!
On the other side of the mountain, we have plenty of sunshine. I have my moments when I wish for a gray, rainy day. Then one comes and I am wishing for the sun! I could live in the room you described, never wanting for another creature comfort.

What an inviting picture. We had a sunroom in Maine for the same reason. We put outdoor but super comfy furniture out there and had birdhouses around. We also had the cutest little fireplace stove for warmth, that was electric but with real looking flames. I loved that room.

What a fun project to pull this vision together into your dream room. I really enjoy the searching out for just the right furniture...because I wouldn't dream of paying retail. Half the fun is in the treasure hunt in second hand stores and yard sales for the perfect piece. Good luck!

Well, you have the plan and I'm sure you'll make it work! It sounds great and I would give up the first 9 for #10 during our winter! I hope you get the whole list and show us the finished product.

Oh, the southern sun in the winter....it's a horse of a different color. So enjoyable and it looks like you are going to make that happen. Will be anxiously awaiting to see the results. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.

I've often said that all I really need by way of housing is a porch and a bathroom. Come to think of it, maybe I should be saying "sunporch." I love them, especially the ones with a rustic look like the photo you've shared.

When I was growing up I used to go visit my aunt and uncle every summer out in the country of east Texas. His father built the house out of fieldstone and all across the back of the house was a deep porch, 15' or so. Part of it was screened in and I liked to sleep out there.

I love your dream for your sunroom, and would love to see photos as you shape it this winter.

It's funny, in all the years I lived in San Diego, I welcomed the occasional, overcast day as a reason to slow down and pull inward...now I sometimes feel like I'm drowning in them...in our area we can go days without seeing the sun in winter. Now I relish the sun and never mind the heat that once seemed oppressive at times..

Sounds like a lovely place! I had a big sun room in my last house and really enjoyed it. They're especially nice for colder climates.

What a lovely photo. The way you have pictured and experienced your sun room already, it will be a reality in no time (including the sun being out in full force).

And you are not only a wonderful writer, but a painter, too? That on top of all the other things you do for your community? WOW Rosaria!

Note:
This will be my room!
My husband can use the paint brushes if he wishes, but the set up is mainly for me!

When you finish, I'll bring the bottle of wine :)

I see I am not the only one who cuts a picture from a magazine and then ponders how I can have it or a part of it. Most of all on your wonderful list, I like "a cozy place to nap with the sun on my face" We have a "4 season room" (MN term) which we do not use in the winter because we do not want to spend the $$ on heating....so it becomes a walk in freezer/wine cellar, etc. amidst its wicker furniture ... Oh I feel a blog post coming on.

I cannot tell you how many pictures from magazines I cut out as examples of the sunroom I wanted to add on to our house. It never happened and likely will not, with the downturn in the economy and all. I will, however, tag along on your idea to cull out stuff I don't want this winter. I intended to do that during the summer, when I had more LIGHT and therefore more energy! But this summer began so late with all the rain in June-July that I never got going. So might as well try your idea.

After realizing that we would not build a sunroom, I decided it was paramount to repaint the inside of the house. It was all dark green walls and when we bought it 13 years ago, and we lived with that for eight years. I finally hired a guy to come do the work, and selected that Devine paint made for the northwest because it works some magic with light. Even the white shades truly are different/better than other brands.

It is wonderful to dream and plan; it keeps up motivated, despite life less pleasant events as we age. I hope your mood p[an works out .

i can easily envision this room as well. i wish that it becomes a reality for you very soon. we all need a place to lie down and have the sun warm our faces.

ahhh - love this.

I love "lists" of things - in books, blogs, etc -- don't know why; I just do.

May your wishes all come true!

Here comes the dreaded "fixed income" comment: As a retiree living in an older house I can't sell, I suddenly find there are dozens of things I'd like to change or update. Some of them I can tackle slowly as DIY projects (groan), but many I can only wish about.

I got pretty good at delayed gratification when I was younger, but we boomers are not terribly good at total self-denial, are we?

Hilary said...

That sounds just about perfect to me. Once you tackle the clean up part, I'll bet it will come together pretty quickly.

I love the photo and the idea of having a place where the sun will warm your face as you nap for a couple of hours. Brilliant.

Greetings from London.

Rosario, I too would love a sun room, and I live in California. Your ideas are great, especially the easel and paints and a spot for sun on your face. On your comment today on my blog you mentioned you might buy that book I reviewed, and I recommend more his earlier book Ragamuffin Gospel since it is more upbeat! Just sayin'.
