A Sunday Walk to the Beach

Some people drive to the beach. Some people drive on the beach. Oregon allows that. Strange, isn't it? Fortunately, there are few people who do. But they do leave tell-tale signs.

I can walk to this beach, at Battle Rock, the site of an early battle between early explorers and the Rogue Indians. Only two explorers remained, escaping through the woods to tell others about the natives' disposition. There are signs about this battle; but nobody is proud of the results.

Some people never leave their cars; they park and take pictures, and admire the rock formations. They never get their feet wet.

Some prefer to sit by the lakeside picnic table/a step away from the Ocean and take in the tranquillity of the lake on sunny days.

It's Sunday, and a sunny, calm day for a walk to the beach. Out of my driveway, I can walk to three different places. Each time, I'm pinching myself, incredulous of my good luck. I walk to the beach to be in the presence of a bigger source of wisdom.

This place makes me feel blessed.

Such gorgeous nature! You are blessed! I live 5 minutes away from a train station, so in a way, i suppose I am "blessed" too ;-)

My toes remember the feel of Oregon coast sand. When I was a child we would drive from Portland, visit family in Coos County, and then go camp for a few days at the campground (private) between Port Orford and Gold Beach.

Thanks for stopping by my simplicity blog. I post much more often at Willow's Cottage.

I am suffering some severe beach envy! I'm so land locked here in the midwest. You are truly blessed. Fun pics.

Hi Rosaria

I like your "I walk to the beach to be in the presence of a bigger source of wisdom..."

because that is the way I feel when I am in nature, on the beach, in the forest, or on the river...in the presence of something pretty mighty and incredulous...

aren't we fortunate...

Happy days

Firstly, I agree -- you are truly blessed to live in such a magical, natural setting. Secondly, I applaud you for truly appreciating and enjoying your surroundings. I too find a greater peace in the best cathedral of all -- nature. I love that you get your feet wet. It is not lost on you, that's for sure! Enjoy.

That's the way I feel in the presence of the ocean; contemplative.

Beautiful pictures! And I can relate to your awe and thankfulness. We in my little family are lake dwellers, which is one of the intitial reasons I was drawn to your blog (and username). I feel like we're able to raise our girls with a special sense of peace and beauty here.

to walk on the beach with your shoes off does seem to bring you closer that source of wisdom...big smiles.

Thérèse and I we miss the waves and the sand and the wind. But they are far away and your dollar is spoiling our dreams of wide open sea. We used to go to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. We even "enjoyed" a hurricane tail while camping out there with our, then, three youg kids. Unforgetable. Once it was all over the beach had changed and several features had moved, for three days the waves grinding the rocks made such a noise that the kids refused to walk up to the top of the dune to have a look.

I do understand why you feel blessed. Communing with mother nature could never have been more serene that taking in the beauty of this place in perfect peace(meaning away from the maddening crowd and noise of the city). Such a tranquil place makes the perfect setting for painting or writing poems and short stories.

What a gorgeous place, you truly are blessed!

Looking at these photos makes me both yearn for the ocean and the west, and to want to go out and be truly grateful for this gorgeous eastern place where I now reside.

I'm in need of a dose of the wisdom you mention...time to venture out into nature....

Aye, blessing and fortune are a matter of work and perception. You seem to have found both.

When I was young, we camped a couple of times at Oswald West State Park (Short Sands Beach) on the Oregon Coast. You had to park up along the highway and use wheelbarrows provided to cart your camping gear down the paths through the forest to the camp ground in the forest about a half mile (?) from the beach. There were tidal pools, large piles of driftwood, star fish galore. Of all the camping I was forced to endure as a kid, this was my favorite place.

I know just how you feel. That's why I go there too. The Oregon coast is very beautiful.

What a gorgeous beach! I’m all for bare feet in the sand over tires. My favorite beaches are the ones that allow you to walk for miles.

I absolutely love Oregon. Our first trip there was in June. Every bend i the road offers a view more stunning than the one before it.

It is beautiful.
Those tire tracks remind me of driving through Oregon during Dune Fest. We didn't stop to watch, but it seems there definitely a lot of folks who like to drive on the beach!

Looks like for the most part it's quite peaceful.

How beautiful the Oregon coast is! Such a shame that people drive on the beach, but so lovely that there are so many other ways to enjoy the glorious nature all around.

We are all blessed in some way, if we look closely enough, aren't we?

Addendum: Oregon's waterways are public lands, all of them. There are laws in the books that go back decades stating that the public has access to all waterways. It includes the two docks on the lake on my property. If someone wanted to moor, jump off their boats and come on land, I could not prevent them for doing so.

By the same rationale, I could travel miles on the Rogue and pull off and set up tent on shore for the night, and I would be welcome anywhere.

There are stretches of dunes that allow ATV to explore and to race each other. Many youngsters get their first ATV when they are barely able to manuver the vehicle, barely looking over the steering wheel. I bet they learn to drive on those things-graduating from Big-Wheels to ATV. Of course, there are enough injuries to discourage such habits.

Officially, to rent an ATV one has to be sixteen; but there are a lot of parents who own their own vehicles and allow their young ones to have those thrills and spills. BTW, there is very little else to do for young people.

Our school board added three more sports this year just to keep our young people active and motivated year round. (All that rain can get to you.)

Thanks for visiting.
