Drop the bridge and let us pass!

These old timers at the entrance to a car show for the local Rotary Club announce their good intentions, with their smiles.  I like being greeted when I enter a new space.

The word verification process on Blogger doesn't invite us in. If I were a spammer, I'd find a way to leave my comment because that's my job, to invade, to create a nuisance.  This complicated process of copying down two different words that are barely legible is most annoying.  I spend less time writing this post, searching for this picture, and pressing the publish button than adding a comment.

Those who want to, can take a stronger stand by moderating all comments before they go public. With the present word identification process on,  a whole lot of people like me will give up after the first try!

We should all write to Bloggers, or drop the device, or device something else.

I totally agree with you, Rosaria. I've opted out of word verification myself and so far have not had any problems.

i agree completely on word verification...and with the fire earlier this week, been having to hit the library and the words dont even show up on older versions of IE so i just cant comment....

My husband, not an old timer at the time, used to stand at the gate at one of the flying shows for Rotary. I hope he smiled at everyone :)

My blog is verification free and will remain so. Diane

My blog is word verification free, so come on over and say howdy, friend.
I moderate the comments before they are published; 99 percent are fine.

I agree. It is frustrating to this reasonably intelligent woman when I can't quite figure out the correct response, so I give up and don't leave a comment.

When I started having trouble with the word verification, I went into my own blog and took out the requirement.

I don't have a problem with word verification, but I don't mind that you or anyone else does. Just to put some balance into the discussion, lest anyone should think the whole world's agin the practice!

I hate it too and have taken it off. I've just posted on the same topic, as have a lot of others. Sigh....

I have no problem with the new word verification. I think people are trying too hard to recognize the words when all you need to do is type what you see without thinking about it. If that makes sense.

Old timers greeting you with smiles on their face is precious.

As for the word verification, I think it is part of google's plan to rule the world!

Thanks for the heads up, Rosaria!

This has been a hot topic on many blogs this week. I hate it too and strongly urge bloggers to opt out of it. I did a long time ago and haven't had any problems...knock on wood...

As someone who needs both glasses and magnifying glass to read these infernal "word verification" bits, I am utterly annoyed at them. And I'm starting to lose patience, and simp1y not comment on the blogs where the WVs that are too hand. Fortunately, there is a little circular arrow you can press on, which will give you a new WV. One can do that until something close-to-legible comes along.

I prefer to skip that, and use comment moderation. It's a process that allows me to remove any garbage, before it invades my blog, or the blogs of my readers. (And I've been seeing a lot of garage lately.)

You have touched a nerve! And...I discovered tonight that if I read your blog through the networked blogs link on FB my computer would not bring up the comment field. I had to go back to your post through the blogger dashboard. Nothing is simple!
Yes...I like to be welcomed in.

I agree. The new device is really bad and I have not been commenting as much as I usually do because of it. You can turn it off in your blog but most people do not.

Agree 100% they treat the comment section like it's a freaking bank transaction. I hope when I get that old I can be friendly like those two guys...though I already have the beard!

rjerdee said...

I dropped the device long ago...a blogging friend said we didn't need it and she wouldn't comment if she saw it sitting there...

I've ditched it myself. Now, I HAVE received a couple of emails of what spammers were going to put on my blog since I dropped Word Verification. However, those comments never made it to the blog itself. Therefore, the Blogging police do their job even without those two words.

I noticed something in the last couple of days, though. Suddenly there have not been splotches behind my words. Maybe they are trying? Still. with just the ONE word, I never even had a spammer get in enough to make it to my email.

I like having comments appear in my email, so that I CAN delete something if I choose.

I love the way your put it--blogger does not invite us in to comment. Exactly.

The entire Comment process is intimidating. The word verification has been (for me) the easiest part. I had to advise a couple of local friends to chose "anonymous" as identity because Open ID and Name/URL made no sense to them. I need to go back and look at my own account; maybe there are changes I can make?

i've noticed how much more difficult those image challenges are becoming....i don't think i have it on my blog, but i'm going to check now just to make sure and remove it if i do. people have enough to deal with without having unnecessary nuisances added to their day.

I am in total agreement - the word verification process is annoying and I wonder if it really serves as any protection! I use comment moderation which works just fine for me.

I am in agreement with most people here.... I never minded one word verification, but two is silly so I have taken it off my blog as well. And I agree with you about having 'meeters and greeters' when entering a new space..a smiling face will always want you to linger for a while.

Word verification is a nightmare now, but I know too many people who've had nothing but trouble with spammers & worse.
I wouldn't mind putting in two words that I could read.

Good post on an immediate issue! I agree it's sometimes hard to read the nonsensical letters, but we really don't want any more spam, either, do we? If Blogger could just make it a little easier to decipher the letters, we'd all be happier.

OldLady Of The Hills said...

It looks like they made one change already---they got rid of that "cloud" that obscured the letters even more....!
Comment Moderaton is The Answer!!!

Thanks for coming by....Vagabonde was so generous in going to Great Neck and taking all those pictures...It brought back a lot of memories....!

I'm with you Rosaria! The new word verification is a real pain. The old one was bad enough, and I've had it turned off for years.

Another thing, is that for some mysterious reason, I cannot comment on your food blog. I am however, reading every post, and thought that your blueberry-yogurt muffins were fab! Thanks for the great recipe!

Agreed. I ranted about this on Wednesday. Many have removed the word verification.. too many still have not. Spam is not such a big deal these days. Blogger's filters catch all but a very few. The way I see it, I'd rather spend my time removing the odd comment than have every one of my visitors spend their blogging time trying to leave a comment. I've never used WV and I've had minimal problems.

I agree with you. I thought I was in a minority, but judging by your readers' feedback, we're a MAJORITY! I'll be contacting blogger, too.

Thanks for such a powerful post.

Greetings from London.

I apparently really suck at the word verification thing, as it takes me a few tries to get the slanty words right. So frustrating! I'm off to double check that my own blog does not require that of others, and if it does, I'm taking it down.

Smitty said...

I also suck at the word verification activity, so I realized I did not want to put others through it.

I already moderate comments (as I have had a spammer or two), so why add an unpleasant hoop to jump through? Or rather, TWO unpleasant, almost illegible hoops?
