Week in-Week Out

Every summer, I plan a new project for my garden. This was going to be  this year's project. It is a parkway strip in Portland, by a hotel on the Willamette.Notice how it was all going to come together:

It is a strip of grass by the roadway.
It has a circulating pump that provides running water.
It is surrounded by lush plantings and spectacular color display.
Rocks and shrubbery live harmoniously together.

As I said, this Portland riverside garden was the inspiration.

As of now, midsummer, nothing has been created to resemble this or any other plan.
Week in and week out, we are tending to tasks at hand. Mostly, we are anticipating the next visit, or the next event, and adjust our budget and our house accordingly.

In addition, at our age, health issues trump everything else we have planned.
Next week, for instance, is all booked already for medical/surgical visits that include overnight stay as our specialists are located miles from us.

Plans are there to inspire and guide us; but life goes on with or without them.

that picture is nice, it would be so nice to have it in the yard.

I also had so many things planned for this summer, but....

Like you said, Plans are there to inspire and guide us; but life goes on with or without them.

Hope all goes well next week.

Yes, the health appointments need to come first. I had a week in and week out kind of summer too. I was busy everyday and got a lot done, just not what I had thought I'd get done.

Absolutely, life happens. Take care, and let that inspiration get you through next week.

That's what I learned from you.

One thing you can be sure of is that the project ain't goin' anywhere - it will still be there when you finally have the time to get to it, just like the laundry!

Keep planning your garden as it is a way to a healthy life.

I sincerely wish you all the best wishes for good health.

We all need to be open to change no matter what stage we are at in our lives.

love to you

Ahh the best laid plans...

I hope all goes well with your upcoming appointments and that the surgical part is nothing serious. Sending best thoughts.

I wanted to do something like what you were proposing, but around our house. Sadly, health issues got in the way. I'm almost in the sixtyfivewhatnow category (month and a half to go) — I hear ya' loud and clear.

Paul is right: "L'homme propose, Dieu dispose." Vraiment.

I do hope that your health concerns can be straightened out without a massive expenditure of energy, or pain, or money on your part.

Wishing you well with your upcoming health care.

It is so important to keep planting those plants in and around those appointments, to see life sprout up amidst the concrete.

That said, best to you and yours. Health is the basis to everything.

The older we get the quicker time travels. I use to moan about weekends vanishing, now I wonder where the entire weeks go.
That is a great idea though and maybe someday---?? I love the sound of running water.
May your medical visits go extremely well.

We fully understand the dilemma. My husband I had same day medical procedues at nearly regional medical center (about 15 miles one way.) I told admissions our social life was spent at physician's offices or medical facilities. Strangely we met a lot of our friends coming and going there too!.

Postscript:
We have to clear our calendar totally to take care of health issues. One, because even simple things like a toothache can develop into a major expense and headache; and two, we can't postpone medical visits because our appointments are out-of-town, and tied to hotel reservations.

So, when our children inquire why we are in Portland or Eugene or...we just say, for routine maintenance, which include medical and recreational outings.

We have come to accept these as part of our life stage. In the future, my blog may contain pictures and verse about glamorous excursions we never wished to take. This time is just a tooth extraction. We have seen these before!

Thanks, everyone for your good wishes!

p.p.p.s:
Take excellent care of your teeth while they are healthy. Not only they become expensive if not cared for, but they can also be a true pain.

Water features are a huge undertaking. You may actually have been inspired not to start it. Hope all goes well on the medical front.

I am learning that the beauty of retirement is that there isn't anything that can't be done tomorrow. I am no longer on anyone's schedule but my own. I hope you enjoy the distractions.

Sorry to hear that you are having dental woes. They can be intense, but I have found the most wonderful line of all natural products, that really work, to prevent future problems. It's called "Nature's Answer", and the toothpaste, rub and rinse, are fantastic and can be found at most health food stores. If not, it is available online. My best wishes and thoughts are with you.

Good luck with the medical issues and one day the garden will get done. From your previous posts and beautiful pics I think the area is pretty in and of itself without the added water feature! I want to come sit on that dock and enjoy the blue waters.

Beautiful garden!!! The garden is the de-stressor before doing all the medical stuff....godd luck!!

Dear Rosaria, I can so relate to the best laid plans of mice and men being thwarted by medical issues. I can remember being so excited in early June at the thought of my hostel experience, with my dear friend, Silvia, at the Pigeon Point lighthouse on the Pacific Coast, then my fall while photographing the scenery, the bout with cellulitis and subsequent FIVE day hospitalization! I never expected that. At least, I'm fully recovered from that episode and hoping that we can go back again but it may have to wait till the summer crowds vacate the area.

I hope all goes well with your visits to Eugene for maintenance and whatever!
