Men retire; women re-direct.


( Portland, on the Willamette River, @ 2010, early morning cruising. No, this is not our boat.)

I don't have to convince any women my age that retirement for women is different than it is for men. Men and women may be in the same boat, but they focus on their surroundings differently.

Men talking to women:
1. Let's do nothing today.
2. Better yet, let's just go down river...

Women:
1. I have laundry to do.
2. Were you not going to clean the garage today?

    Today...the garage can always be cleaned out tomorrow!

    And I do the laundry. Clean, dry and fold...Mrs C does re-fold her stuff though.

    For me the laundry and the garage could wait forever for choosing an outing to the river and doing nothing together with my husband! :-)

    You made me think about the word, *re-tire*. What exactly does that mean? Sounds like putting new tires on a car. The English seem to use *made redundant* which is even more depressing. There must be a better word to describe this adventure into leisurely old age?

    Hmmm...We're not retired but somehow that's the same conversation we've had a few times. I guess that's one part of the "planning for retirement" stage I have down pat!

    I have no idea what you're talking about. The men I know are all busy: we drink coffee; read the newspaper; watch TV; go out for ice cream; play with our tools; run our machines; spend hours on the golf course; watch more TV; and fall into bed exhausted every night!

    It is the other way around at our house. My husband is always thinking about the next chore. I like to ease into them, walk into the room and start doing without any kind of planning ahead. I does occur to me that I'm lazy, but maybe that's not the right word. Maybe there's a kinder word.

    What is most amazing about this is that my husband actually cleaned the garage on Saturday. True, he is not retired but it has taken him seven years. Wonders never cease!
