I have watched the Fox show "So You Think You Can Dance" for the last few seasons. By the end of the show, when the final winner is declared and paraded I'm holding my breath. I don't pick up the phone and vote with the rest. No. I observe, ponder, enjoy and then bet on the winner.
For the last seven seasons, I have picked the winner all but once. Not a bad performance on my part. Just ask me how I figure this out, and I couldn't tell you. Something there is in me that loves dance and dancers and can sniff the most passionate and unique among them.
When a special choreography touches me deeply, I begin to watch for the dancer that got lost in that dance. I follow his/her trajectory, notice the unique way he/she interprets the story line.
This year I lost. I had picked Adachiche to be the winner. Unfortunately, he was not selected. My second pick was Billy, but he too got voted out.
Lauren beat them all. She is quite a dancer, I might add, a joy to watch.
If the company of winners come to your city to perform in the near future, do attend. The performers are outstanding. The choreographers are amazing. The shows all promise to be stunningly beautiful.
If you have young people, do take them with you. They will fall in love with dance.
I managed to miss most of this season but I do enjoy the show. To see the passion laid out there - ahhh. My children watch me watch the show and when they see me cry, which happens quite often, they say, why why why mom, why are you crying? And I say, well, because, look, how brave it is to be that exposed and look, just look at the passion.

I haven't watched the dance shows yet. To my husband's dismay, I am addicted to American Idol; he hates it! I'd have to TIVO it and watch when he wasn't around.

ReplyDeleteI very rarely watch television; I consider most programming to be a waste of time.
I have never watched that but I probably should instead of watching "Dancing With the Stars." I think it would be more thrilling to see young people perform rather than professionals and celebrities.
ReplyDeleteMy daughters watch it also. I watched one or two times, just could not stand that yelling hysterical lady judge so I quit.
ReplyDeleteLast night, the U.S. show being over, they watched the Canadian S.Y.D. that always follows the U.S. one.
I managed to miss every season of this show and all the rest of the "so you think choosing a numbered suitcase will make yoou rich and famous" type shows.
ReplyDeleteAfraid I don't watch the show eithr but my daughter does and she never fails to give me detailed descriptions after every performance. Congrats to Lauren, whoever she is.
ReplyDeleteironically i have never watched this...we have not had a tv...but i still try to pick up a few things on the net...i say ironically as T was a dancer...and she usually likes things like this...will have to check it out...

Love that show and LOVED Lauren! I am so mesmerized by how their bodies are an instrument of art. It is a show that Kidlet and I watch together and I have been thinking about picking up tickets for the show when it comes to our city in the fall. I think this show has resurrected an appreciation for dance and the arts form. Great post.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get to watch it this year, but am with Woman in the Window in that I get so engrossed with the beauty of the dance and the kids being able to do this intricate display of what our bodies are capable of if we had that PASSION, that I will cry tears of awe. I do the same thing for someone playing an instrument really well, or even when I heard Susan Boyle sing her famous first performance. To have the natural talent, self-discipline, ambition, and passion to do any of these things is just a mystery and an envy of mine.

ReplyDeleteMy poor body could never make itself bend in some of those contortions of the more exotic dances, but lovely to watch while others do it with grace.
Ah, the Woman in a Window summarizes it best: "look at the passion."!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's the attraction: to see an artist perform with body and soul, to become something else in that mash.
I followed my daughter's interests and attended various dance classes and performances, from tap, to contemporary, to gymnastics. She went into musical theater and choral work for years in a children's group that competed everywhere. I grew up for twenty plus years following and investing in passionate artistic accomplishments. So, it's second nature by now.
Like most of you, I never took a dance class; but, I move my entire body every time music is on.
I had never watched the show before this season - and I ended up loving Lauren from the beginning! (My mom and aunt made me watch, I swear!) She's got such a great presence and maturity to her dancing :)

ReplyDeleteThere is nothing more amazing than a gifted dancer, irrespective of dance discipline it's always some form of poetry in motion.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched this show but I know it has a great many followers. My mother always missed dancing and I believe she would have watched this show religiously.
ReplyDeleteI watched the first few seasons, but have dropped out now. I think the last one I really watched was when Emmitt Smith won. I watched it almost religiously & really pulled for him to win. He is so charismatic & just plain nice. Fun.
ReplyDeleteMy 4 and 8 yr. old grandchildren are visiting. They're in love with Shakira's "Waka, Waka" and make up dance steps to it with great abandon! The free, fun movement to the music is so contagious and utterly unselfconscious. Just the music and their little bodies love of it!

I've never seen this show but for the first time I watched "Dancing with the Stars"...it was fun and it made me want to get my tushie moving! Hmmm...maybe I need to watch other dance shows!

ReplyDeleteI started to dance only when I was in Turkey, at a disco place in Instanbul. The people there danced so naturally and with such joy that it was natural for me to imitate them. I generally think that Europeans are very inhibited in their dancing.
