There is a whole world we haven't explored yet.

I follow Newkie outdoors, as she beckons me, becoming a follower when called, a stroker when approached.
I become an observer of shadows, as she does, the dancing light attracting us for a while.
Chasing a leaf, she jumps on rails and skitters twenty feet in no time.

I tiptoe gently behind her.
We explore. She disappears in the underbrush and I start my way to the garden,  down to the lake.
She reappears.
She whines, You come back to me! she seems to say.

I cajole her.
I walk up to her and show her that  I can get down and up to the garden space below. She could follow me and play and explore while I gather apples that have fallen.

She sits, watches me from the deck, crying for me to return.

She frets, moves from one end of the deck to the other.
I hurry as though a storm is approaching.

Her cry is my new weather vane.

I want to un-kinck my  whole body the way she does, rolling on the grass, or the carpet edges, reach out and pull myself through and through.
I wonder how she manages her tail when she rolls.

One minute she is running all over the place.
The next, she is in a closet, behind clothes, all in a ball, napping away.

  1. I see that she is starting your mating process, beware she will soon control you. Remember that dogs have masters but cats have staff.

  2. Cats are so cool. They give one a new way of looking at the world around us. They are like people in that some just jump out there without thinking, fearless and willing to suffer the consequences. Others like Newkie, and myself for that matter, prefer to tiptoe in and test the waters as they go through life.

  9. I have never been a cat person, but I can see how a cat can "pull you in!"

  11. This flows like poetry. It's beautiful. And so are cats. I would love to see the world through their eyes.

I love your title. It's true!!

  13. Love. It is love! This description of the communication between you and Newkie as you walked to your garden and she talked from the deck is totally heartwarming (tear-jerking, too). Her cry is my new weather vane is one of the most beautiful lines I've ever read written about a cat.....

Now, I must refer you to a blog on my blogroll that I have been following for maybe two years: We Three, Ginger Cats Tales, whose author is an artist/author living in Wales. She lost two of her precious cats during the time I have been reading her blog, and her readers mourned with her. If you go back in time there you will see post after post of the Gingers walking the hills and cliffs overlooking the sea...they are beyond magical. I went back to May to find this video that Jackie made of Elmo visiting the ghost cats on one of his walks. Beautiful and enchanting.

  14. This is such a wonderful description of Newkie, and cats in general! I'm a cat person, and I can particularly relate to the last line...

Glad to see that Butters has a new home, and even a facebook page. I hope that you are OK, your earlier post was so sad, about this time last year... thinking of you and sending you some warm wishes from over here.

  15. I have sat on my porch for many minutes watch the instincts and attention of my now 12 yr old Luckie.

Late in the evening when it is a pleasant temperature, I love to hear the birds call to each other

We think we see everything in life, but I, for one, believe, that is impossible only if we make it impossible.

  16. My cat also stars in today's post :-)

Let them who aren't paying attention dismissively call us "cat bloggers" but I'll tell you what: if cat's cost 10 thousand dollars, people would appreciate how amazing they are to live with!

  21. Cats know how to live. They are beautiful little things. Too bad about all the little creatures they kill though.

  22. It's so lovely to see you and Newkie settling in with each other. Cats do have a way of becoming a major part of your life. (As I write this, SweetPea, a lively one year old, is trying to take over the keyboard while licking my fingers!) It's so fascinating to try to see the world from their perspective! Many times, one or all of my three cats will force me to stop running around and just be in the moment with them. I hope you and Newkie have many moments of delightful mutual discovery.

  23. Your Newkie is a beautiful feline. Cats are so much company – we miss our two cats when we go away. I posted a cat poem a couple of weeks ago on my blog. While in New York we saw many dogs and wished cats could be taken for a walk like dogs – I am sure there are many cats in NYC, but I only saw one, at a blogger’s place.

  25. I'm glad that you and Newkie have become such fast friends. I'm sure that the two of you will be good to and for each other.
Yup; Newkie's great. Well, actually, not bad, for a cat.
